- Navy Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program
- The Navy currently looking for top notch engineers for our Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate (NUPOC) program. Here’s a brief overview: basic requirements are to be within 2.5 years of attaining undergraduate degree, 1 year of calculus and calculus based physics, and U.S. citizenship. Students with strong academic records are selected to perform technical interviews in Washington D.C. at Naval Reactors and are then offered a position in the program. Benefits include a $15,000 signing bonus, approximately $5,000/month for the rest of their undergraduate education and free health care, and all that is expected in return is that students maintain a 3.0 GPA and graduate on time. After graduating college, students attend Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and are then commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy. They then begin their training as either Submarine or Nuclear Surface Warfare Officers, Naval Reactors Engineers, or Nuclear Power Instructors. The specific career path is chosen during the application process, and as a Nuclear Surface Warfare officer myself (with friends in all 4 fields) I’d be happy to talk about what a career as a Naval Officer is like. It’s a great career path which balances a rigorous technical education (nuclear power training a couple years of material compressed into one year) and intense leadership experience (new officers are placed in charge of a division of about 15-20 sailors), all with a great salary and benefits. The best part, however, is that a candidate’s salary begins the day he’s accepted into the program. We also offer all expenses paid VIP trips for interested students to a variety of nuclear ships and facilities, typically a few days in Florida, to get a feel for what life as a nuclear engineer is like.
