TASSELS

The tassel worn on the cap (mortarboard) designates the degree or level of degree as follows:

Bachelor of Science degree candidates wear orange tassels indicating the type of degree.
Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap, and will participate in our dramatic tassel-turning ceremony when their degrees have been conferred.

Master of Science degree candidates wear black tassels indicating the level of their degree.
Candidates for the Master of Science wear their tassels on the left side indicating they have already earned a degree.

Doctor of Philosophy degree candidates wear gold tassels indicating the level of their degree.
Candidates for the Ph.D. wear their tassels on the left side indicating they have already earned a degree.

Please reference this quick guide to show you how to wear your academic attire in preparation for the student line up.

Hood and Hood Color

The hood is worn by graduates receiving a higher degree, specifically for Master of Science or the Doctor of Philosophy. The velvet portion of the hood corresponds to the title of the degree to be awarded (not the subject studied). The interior lining, generally silk, displays the color of the institution from which the degree was earned.

Bachelor of Science degree candidates do not have a hood.

Master of Science degree candidates have a hood. The color of the velvet corresponds to the title of the degree (Science) rather than the subject studied (Engineering). Therefore, the color of the facing will be golden yellow, NOT orange. Master of Science students should be wearing their hoods when they arrive at the student line up.

Doctor of Philosophy degree candidates have a hood. The color of the velvet corresponds to the title of the degree (Doctor of Philosophy) rather than the subject studied (Engineering). Therefore, the color of the facing will be dark blue, NOT orange, no matter what the field of study. Ph.D. students DO NOT WEAR YOUR HOOD when you arrive at the student line up. Please carry your hood as you will be hooded on stage by your faculty advisor or your department chair.
