The graduation cap (also knows as the mortarboard) is worn with the long point of the shell to the rear.
The tassel worn on the cap (mortarboard) designates the degree or level of degree as follows:
Bachelor of Science degree candidates wear orange tassels indicating the type of degree.
Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap, and will participate in our dramatic tassel-turning ceremony when their degrees have been conferred.
Master of Science degree candidates wear black tassels indicating the level of their degree.
Candidates for the Master of Science wear their tassels on the left side indicating they have already earned a degree.
Doctor of Philosophy degree candidates wear gold tassels indicating the level of their degree.
Candidates for the Ph.D. wear their tassels on the left side indicating they have already earned a degree.
Hood and Hood Color
The hood is worn by graduates receiving a higher degree, specifically for Master of Science or the Doctor of Philosophy. The velvet portion of the hood corresponds to the title of the degree to be awarded (not the subject studied). The interior lining, generally silk, displays the color of the institution from which the degree was earned.
Gold Fourragère (Honor Cords)
Gold Fourragère /Honor cords, made of braided cord and worn over the arm at the left shoulder, signify academic distinction and are awarded to those undergraduates who have attained Latin Honors of Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude. For latin honor eligibility please refer to ELIGIBILITY).
Students eligible for latin honors can purchase the Gold Fourrageres/Honor cords from Graduation, Etc beginning Monday, June 4th. Graduation, Etc will have a list from the HSSEAS; make sure you identify yourself as an engineering student so that Graduation Etc checks the correct list.
