New Student FAQs

I think I want to change my major already. Is that possible?

If you have been admitted to an engineering major and are interested in changing to another major within the Samueli School of Engineering, it is possible to change, but the earliest you can apply is after you have completed at least two quarters at UCLA.  We are going to look at the grades you earn in the courses that are relevant to engineering, such as math, physics, chemistry, and computer science.  The process is outlined at our Change of Major website.

If you are considering a major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science & Engineering, you are required to complete specific major courses and get minimum grades in them to qualify.  These eligibility requirements can be found on the Change of Major website under “Minimum Eligibility requirements to apply” and also under “Additional requirements for requests to CS, CSE, CE.” You can notify your academic counselor that you are interested in other engineering majors when you meet with them at summer orientation and we can help you plan your classes accordingly.  Students are allowed to change their major within the Samueli School of Engineering once. Students who are interested in changing to a major in the College of Letters & Science should notify their academic counselor at summer orientation and also reach out to counselors from the College of Letters & Science to find out the requirements for their desired major.

How do I know what credit I will get at UCLA with my AP exams or college transfer credit?
The following AP exams will result in credit that can be applied towards degree requirements:
  • 4/5 on either English exam will give credit for ENGCOMP 3, which fulfills UCLA’s Writing I requirement
  • 5 on AB Calculus or 4 on BC Calculus will allow a student to receive credit for Math 31A (Calculus I)
  • 5 on BC Calculus will result in credit for Math 31A (Calculus I) and will also give the student the option to skip Math 31B (Calculus II)
  • 4/5 on Chemistry will give the student the option to skip Chem 20A
  • 4/5 on Physics C-Mechanics will give the student the option to skip Physics 1A
Passing the other AP exams not listed, or passing the above exams with lower scores than listed above will result in students receiving units, but these units do not apply towards fulfilling any degree requirements for engineering, including General Education (G.E.) requirements. Transfer credit from other colleges and universities will be determined after all official transcripts have been received and prior to the student attending orientation in the summer.  To get an approximate idea of what your courses might be equivalent to, you can use the website transferology.com.

How do I find out more about financial aid and scholarships?
There are several opportunities for scholarships at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.  The criteria for eligibility varies by award, but typically we are able to award all levels, all majors, domestic, international, freshmen admits, transfer admits, new, and continuing engineering students.
Some scholarships will just use your admission application, so already when you apply to UCLA you are being considered for awards for which you are eligible and you do not need to do anything extra.
Some scholarships require a separate application, like the opportunities found here: https://ucla.academicworks.com/  You can fill out one general application and it will try to match you with available opportunities at UCLA both for prospective students and continuing enrolled students.
Or the additional scholarships through the school of Engineering that has an application in the Summer Quarter that is open to all currently enrolled Engineering students.  For this one you will need to have submitted your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) by the May 1st Deadline.
If you have any additional questions, you can connect with the Financial Aid office at one of their Bruin Bound Sessions and you can check out the information for Prospective students available on the Financial Aid and Scholarships site.  To connect with Engineering specifically, we invite you to reach us at the email scholarships@seas.ucla.edu.

How do I get help planning my schedule?
When you attend orientation in the summer, you will meet in small groups with an Engineering counselor from your major.  At that time, we will assess any college credits you may have coming in (AP, IB, Community College, etc.) and make recommendations on what to enroll in for your fall quarter.  During the fall quarter, the office will host class planning workshops specifically for new freshmen.
