Q&A with Graduate Students – TBD
Join us for a live Zoom session with two of our UCLA Samueli graduate student groups — Engineering Graduate Students Association (eGSA) and Graduate Society of Women Engineers (GradSWE). You will hear about their experience, including why they chose UCLA for their graduate studies and have an opportunity to ask questions.
Please RSVP and a link will be emailed to you prior to the event.
Engineering Graduate Students Association (eGSA) at UCLA
UCLA’s eGSA student group represents the graduate students of the seven departments of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (HSSEAS). We host events for graduate students, work with the administration and strive to make the graduate experience productive, smooth, fruitful and fun.
Graduate Society of Women Engineers (GradSWE) UCLA
Our UCLA GradSWE student group advocates for women graduate engineers and provides resources, tools and opportunities for professional development and networking. Its mission is to support, inspire, and empower the current and future female engineering community to excel in all endeavors. UCLA GradSWE accomplishes this by: (1) fostering a welcoming and inclusive community through education, advocacy, and respect for all individuals; (2) providing professional and personal development through workshops and networking; (3) encouraging members to become role models for future generations through leadership and mentorship opportunities; and (4) serving as a resource for information pertaining to women engineers through events, social media, and online distributions.
UCLA Samueli Graduate Student Experience
Following are short videos from UCLA graduate students sharing a glimpse of their experience.
Trinny Tat
Bioengineering
Tat is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Bioengineering Department. She helps to design portable bioelectronics for Parkinson’s disease monitoring as a member of Professor Jun Chen’s Wearable Bioelectronics Research Group. Tat is also a recipient of the National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship and is involved on campus as the external VP in the Bioengineering Graduate Association. (Video recorded in 2022)
Lindsey Parsons
Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Parsons is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department. She is in Professor Carissa Eisler’s research group and studies nanophotonics and optoelectronics, mainly inorganic perovskite nanocrystals and their unique optical properties. She is involved in promoting access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education through multiple organizations on campus.
Yifan Gao
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Gao is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. As a member of Professor Shaily Mahendra’s research group, she mainly studies fungal enzymatic catalysis in environmental applications. Gao is also active in various organizations and outreach activities to promote diversity in academia.
Arjun Subramonian
Computer Science
Subramonian is a second-year Ph.D. student in the Computer Science Department. They are in Professor Yizhou Sun and Professor Kai-Wei Chang’s research groups, and they study fair, just and responsible machine learning in the context of networks. They also organize with the organization Queer in AI and support diversity and inclusion initiatives at machine learning conferences.
Shyandeep Das
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Das is a second-year master’s student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Advised by Professor Nader Sehatbaksh, he specializes in the field of computer systems architecture, and hardware/software co-design. He is also a board member of the ECE Graduate and Postdoc Society (ECEGAPS) and often collaborates with other student groups such as the Engineering Graduate Student Association (eGSA) to host events with the aim of bringing people together.
Maggie Fox
Materials Science and Engineering
Fox is a fifth-year Ph.D. student in the Materials Science and Engineering Department. She is in Interim Dean Bruce Dunn’s research group and her work focuses on non-planar and solid-state batteries, fast-charging cathode materials, and using sol-gel science to create insulating materials. Outside of the lab, Fox has done work for the Society of Women Engineers and has also started a program titled Women in STEM: Breaking Barriers, which helps historically excluded groups with personal and professional development.
Zachary Wong
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Wong is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. Advised by Professor Timothy Fisher, he received a 2022 NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunities grant for his research on oscillating heat pipes, which disperse heat to regulate system temperatures.
