2003-2004 A Message from the Dean

The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has been at the forefront of this nation's pursuit of knowledge and innovative technology since California Governor Earl Warren signed a bill to provide instruction in engineering at the UCLA campus in 1943. Over the last sixty years, while we have grown in size, we have remained committed to excellence in learning, scholarship, and discovery as one of the top education and research institutes in the country.

Our reputation is based on our relentless pursuit of high-quality education and research in new frontiers of applied science and engineering, as well as our preeminence in such multidisciplinary areas as information technology, bioengineering, nanomanufacturing, national infrastructure renewal, and the protection of our environment and natural resources.

Located next to the world-renowned UCLA Medical Center, and home to several cutting-edge research centers, the School of Engineering is ideally situated for multidisciplinary research and education. UCLA also benefits from its proximity to the Los Angeles entertainment and media industries, Silicon Valley, the defense and aerospace industries, and a growing biotechnology sector.

To prepare our students for the fast-paced change of today's engineering profession, we are focusing on curriculum reforms that ensure our graduates receive an education with the breadth and depth they need to succeed. Recognizing the unprecedented opportunities that exist in biotechnology, we have created a new Department of Bioengineering that will accept its first freshman students in Fall Quarter 2004.

We have a distinguished faculty that devotes a substantial amount of time toward undergraduate education. Many of our faculty are award-winning teachers and recognized experts in their field. In 2003, three members of our faculty were elected to the National Academy of Engineers, and one member each was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. It is a rare achievement for one institution to have this many faculty members recognized in a single year.

Undergraduate student research opportunities are amply available and we encourage our students to take advantage of them. The School has several world-class interdisciplinary research centers including the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS), the Institute for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration (CMISE) and the Center for Nanoscience Innovation for Defense (CNID). Our School is also an active participant in the California Nanosystems Institute (CNSI), located at UCLA.

We are seeking exceptional and dedicated students who want to contribute to the community, to science, and to industry. I invite you to consider becoming a UCLA engineer.
