Every year UCLA faculty and staff are invited to nominate engineering students for awards and honors recognized in the annual UCLA Samueli Commencement printed program and school-wide notices.  Many of the awards are specific to graduating students.  Deadline for all 2019-2020 Awards listed below is May 11, 2020  Questions regarding Commencement awards for engineering may be forwarded to commencement@seas.ucla.edu

Engineering Achievement Award for Student Welfare

2019-2020 Eligibility:  Engineering student.  Recipient need not be a degree candidate.

Description/Criteria: Awarded to undergraduate and graduate engineering students who have made outstanding contributions to student welfare through participation in extracurricular activities and who have given outstanding service to the campus community.

Award: Citation

Nomination Process: A letter* nominating student(s) for award, outlining how student(s) meets the criteria for award must be submitted via email to commencement@seas.ucla.edu 

*Nominations by faculty, staff, peers and others are strongly encouraged; however, self-nominations will be considered. Selection will be made by the OASA Awards Committee

Commencement Student Speaker

2020 Eligibility: Engineering undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing AND a degree candidate for Summer 2019, Fall 2019, Winter 2020, Spring 2020, and Summer 2020.  Students who are candidates for Fall 2020 may apply if approved to participate in the Ceremony via the Special Request Process.

Students should have a record of University, Community, or Student Services

Description/Criteria: Prepare an acceptable speech 3 to 5 minutes in length on a theme related to Commencement/Graduation.  One student will be selected to represent all degree recipients at the UCLA Samueli Commencement Ceremony.

Application Process:  Submit a letter of application. The letter of application should be addressed to the Student Speaker Selection Committee and contain the following:

  • a brief summary about the applicant (include major, degree to be awarded, plans after degree completion)
  • a Resume (include an address, local telephone number, and E-mail address where you can be contacted.)
  • an outline/draft of your speech.

Harry M. Showman Prize

2019-2020 Eligibility:  Engineering student.  One graduate level AND one undergraduate level award will be considered. Recipients need not be degree candidates.
 

Description/Criteria: Awarded to those who most effectively communicate the achievements, research, results or social significance of any aspect of engineering to a student audience, the engineering professions, or the general public. Primary consideration will be given to written articles or editorial services for an engineering student publication, but the award may also be conferred for meritorious contributions in other areas of communication.

Award: Plaque and monetary award (monetary award subject to fund verification)

Nomination Process: A letter* nominating student(s) for award, outlining how student(s) meets the criteria for award, and any supporting documentation (such as articles, papers, etc.) must be submitted via email to commencement@seas.ucla.edu

*Nominations by faculty, staff, peers and others are strongly encouraged; however, self-nominations will be considered. Selection will be made by the HSSEAS Honors and Awards Committee.

National Anthem Performer (Vocalist or Instrumentalist)

2020 Eligibility:  Engineering student in good academic standing*.  Applicant(s) need not be a degree candidate.

Description/Criteria: A student(s) *may be selected to perform the National Anthem at the annual UCLA Samueli Commencement Ceremony.   Finalists will be required to audition live in front of the selection committee on May 11 or 12, date, time and location TBD.

Application Process: Prepare an audition recording and letter of introduction about yourself.  The letter of application should be addressed to the Student Vocalist Selection Committee, and include:

  • a brief summary about the applicant (include major, degree expected term, etc)
  • a Resume (include an address, local telephone number, and e-mail address where you can be contacted.)
  • an audition tape (ex: CD, mp3, link)

Finalists will be required to audition live in front of the selection committee.

*selection for National Anthem performer may be opened to outside, non-student applicants.

Outstanding Bachelor of Science Award

2019-2020 Eligibility:  undergraduate students who will complete their B.S. in Summer 2019, Fall 2019, Winter 2020, Spring 2020, or Summer 2020.

Description/Criteria: Criteria may include items such as GPA, creativity, research, and community service.

Award: Plaque and monetary award (monetary award subject to fund verification)

Nomination Process:  A letter* nominating student for award, outlining how student meets the criteria for award, and any supporting documentation (such as papers, articles, etc.) should be forwarded via email to commencement@seas.ucla.edu

There will be no School-wide nomination process for Outstanding Master of Science and Outstanding Doctor of Philosophy Awards. Check with your academic department to find out if there will be department selection.

Ph.D Marshal for Graduate Division Hooding Ceremony

2020 Eligibility: Engineering Ph.D student in good academic standing AND a degree candidate for Summer 2019, Fall 2019, Winter 2020, Spring 2020 and Summer 2020.  Students who are candidates for Fall 2020 may apply if approved to participate in the Ceremony via the Special Request Process.

Description/Criteria: Each School and College can nominate up to 2 candidates for the honor of representing as a Marshal at the UCLA PhD Hooding Ceremony.  Graduate Division will select 2 official marshals from this pool to serve at the Ceremony.

Application Process:  This requires Department or Faculty Nomination.

Russell R. O’Neill Distinguished Service Award

2019-2020 Eligibility:  upper division (Jr./Sr.) undergraduate engineering student in good standing.  Recipient need not be a degree candidate.

Description/Criteria:  An award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the undergraduate student body, student organizations, the School, and to the advancement of the undergraduate engineering program through service and participation in extracurricular activities.

Award: Plaque and monetary award (monetary award subject to fund verification)

Nomination Process: A letter* nominating student for award, outlining how student meets the criteria for award, and any supporting documentation (such as articles, resume etc.) must be submitted via email to commencement@seas.ucla.edu

Information about Gold Fourragère (Honor Cords)

Gold Fourragère /Honor cords, made of braided cord and worn over the arm at the left shoulder, signify academic distinction and are awarded to those undergraduates who have attained Latin Honors of Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude.  Please see Latin Honors ELIGIBILITY for review of the criteria. 

 

Degree Candidates for Spring 2020, Summer 2020  and Fall 2020 degree candidates who were approved to take part in the Ceremony by Special Request will be eligible to wear the gold fourragère based on grades through Winter 2020 since final spring grades will not be available at the time of Commencement. 
However, official Latin honors will be determined after all grades are evaluated.

Beginning June 3rd, the Graduation Etc. store in Ackerman Union will have a list of those students eligible to buy and thus wear the gold fourragère . 
If you are eligible, make sure you inform Graduation Etc that you are an engineering student so they can check the correct list for your name.  If you have a question specific to your eligibility to wear the fourragère please email jan@seas.ucla.edu with CC: commencement@seas.ucla.edu the following:
